課程概述

大強子對撞機 LHC 在 2011 年數據量快速增加,帶動粒子物理將有大幅的躍進。
本課程以學術攻頂計畫「飛越小林•益川 ─ 探尋第四代夸克」爲主軸,介紹從
前一代 B 介子工廠及 Tevatron 時代到 LHC 時代的轉換,並將第一時間目睹對
希格斯粒子面目之揭示。 

課程目標
The colliders of the past decade (the 2000s) are the "B factories", the Belle experiment at KEK and the BaBar experiment at SLAC, plus the Tevatron experiments, CDF and D0 at Fermilab. We aim to bring about the highlights, especially in regards heavy flavor and CP violation, from these facilities, and the anticipation towards LHC, the up and runnng Large Hadron Collider since 2010.

The B factories confirmed the Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) model of CP violation, based on 3 quark generations, leading to the 2008 Nobel prize for KM. But hints at the B factories lead to the realization that having a 4th quark generation (4G), the CP violation may be sufficient for the disappearance of antimatter from the Universe, or the so-called Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) problem. The increasing bounds on 4G quarks at the Tevatron, together with Nambu receiving also the 2008 Nobel prize for spontaneous symmetry breaking,
linked the 4G to the possibility that electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) itself could be brought about by the large Yukawa couplings associated with the heavy quark masses. A program emerged at NTUHEP during 2008 to 2010:
- pursuit of direct search of 4G quarks t' and b';
- the accompanying phenomenological study;
- towards a lattice field theory study of strong Yukawa coupling.
Aiming to the long term involvement with the CMS experiment at LHC, NTUHEP joined the CMS Pixel Phase 1 Upgrade since 2010, in collaboration with Swiss and German institutes, and CERN. This "3 + 1" approach, with the grand goal of attacking both the BAU and EWSB issues, forms the Academic Summit Project "Beyond Kobayashi-Maskawa --- Towards Discovery of 4th Generation Quarks at the LHC", one of only two such projects in Physics funded by NSC.

The Higgs sector may not be what we had thought, and we are determined to uncover it. This course offers a glimpse of such an endeavor.

The aim of the course is to elucidate how this targeted project was conceived and developed, and the concurrent change of particle physics, towards the LHC Era. We not only wish to convey knowledge, but also to illustrate understanding, and research.
